My Dark Time

I would rather call my “Dark Time” work as “My Dark Side”. When I filled a cremation urn with coal ash, somehow all I can do is to hold it with a strong strange affection, to fill it, to have emotional contact with it. It’s really weird, but I’m taking it very seriously as if it’s a real life being or my lover.

What’s the relationship between coal and eggs? I wanted to add protein to the inanimate coal. They must be internally and essentially connected, or how could they be so perfectly blended and remains irreplaceable?

“Dancing Tree” is about the preservation of this withered tree. The tree died, and someday it will go carbonizing. What I did was accelerating its dying process.

“The Last Magic Box” - There’s always some kind of romance involved with coffin, regardless of its color, shape, material or whatever the meaning it has in different people’s minds. I can never forget the black coffin that I saw under the bed of my friend’s house when I was a little girl.

“The History Book of Love”-Love is constantly changing, the history of which would change with it. I burned the book and mixed the ashes, thus the history of love was recombined.

“Blasting” - Eggs are always full of boundless energy. They nurture life and wherever there is life, there are infinite possibilities.

“Tree Man” was another tree that I had. It’s dead now and I actually tried to save it with live plants. I planted some ivy arums into its root, but they died soon, too. My redemption plan failed and I found this so-called redemption is nothing but grafting.

If it wasn’t for the planning of my next work, I’m not sure when will be the end for this one.

“The Remains of The Origins of Species” - Preserving things at subzero temperatures. This is to against the whole idea of Genetic Modification. “The Remains of the Origins of Species” refers to the ashes of Darwin’s book “The Origins of Species”. The ashes were frozen and nobody can change the way it exists. Species develop from generation to generation by a process of natural selection, and any kind of support or grafting would be anti-natural.
