Double Silkworm Cocoon
From the time they spun themselves in one cocoon, they are bound in a small space
till the end of life. Double Silkworm Cocoon is the creature dies in the name of love.
Neither of them can emerge alone. Perhaps they know they'll eventually be suffocated
& stuck by this bond. Perhaps they know they are spinning themselves a beautiful
grave, and all only for the wish of dying together. I don't know their genuine thought.
Double Silkworm Cocoon has the most beautiful and comfy silk. Many regions are
still practicing this custom:Brides receive two silk quilts as their dowries. The
silk quilts are made of the silk of Double Silkworm Cocoon, as known as the silk
spun in turns by Lovers Silkworm. So gifting silk quilts as dowry is a Chinese
blessing implication-- bringing marriage with the wish of grace, union and eternity.
I liked to spend the springs in my childhood to keep silkworm eggs, observing baby
worms hatching, changing colors and growing slowly, and waiting them spinning cocoons.
It was like taking years, it was the most exciting times in the old days. It bound
itself firmly, and came out of the cocoon with a totally different look from
before. It had become a moth, it grew many eggs then died.
I'd been feeling dead
in the days after its death. I felt nothing, or found that everything was brand
new. Sometimes it took very long to wait for the silkworm to come out, even till
the end of summer. I began to worry that they died inside, or their baby was starving.
I worried that they slept too deep, so I slightly shake it in the wish to get some
response. I heard it, but indeed there was none. I couldn't wait anymore so I opened
it with fear-- there was lying two silkworms, brown, smooth and dead, was dead long
time ago. Till now I can still recall I caressing their hard dead body and smooth
dried shells...
On the day of my marriage I received two silk quilts. While reading the story of
Double Silkworm Cocoon on the booklet, I brought back the memory of those snow white
cocoons, and the two bodies.
